An incredible geometric / abstract pottery sculpture by Gordon Orear (b.1923), circa 1980s. Hand-built three-dimensional unglazed stoneware sculpture on original smoked lucite rectangular base with bronze supports. The sculpture is formed from eight 3" diameter stoneware cylinders joined at various angles to create the geometric angular form. Signed "OREAR" on one end. Sculpture will stand on it's own without the use of the lucite stand. Sculpture itself measures 14.75" H x 23" W x and approximately 7" D. Lucite base measures 3/4" thick x 24.5" W x 7.75" D. From 1957-1964 Orear was the Director of Pottery at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Gordon Orear is known for his systematic research and use of the single fire process that he used to produce a body of functional stoneware pieces. He is also known for his lifelong exploration of the cylinder as an element in sculpture that he began in 1950, typically these fireclay pieces were unglazed. |
