Unique 1930s Sculptural Curio Cabinet
SOLD
Designer: unknown USA - Circa 1930s Dimensions: 63.5" H x 45.25" W x 13.5" D Condition: Very good vintage condition. Striking and unusual this 1930s solid oak cabinet features a stacked barrister inspired design with elliptical shaped glass windows. Bridging the Arts and Crafts movement and modernism, this cabinet shows the craftsman's woodworking skills and interest in a progressive design aesthetic with a nod to Antoni Gaudi and the Art Deco style. Five stacked cabinets feature solid oak tambour rolling doors with vertical elliptical windows. The centre four windows on each tier are intended to be used as the handles for the sliding doors and do not have glass panels. Sculptural and curvaceous, each tier has a undulating front with rounded sides. The modern and playful design of the stacked cabinets rest on a more traditional plinth base with a shell and scroll details. The cabinet is in very good condition for its age. There are, however, a couple of small losses of wood molding, preexisting repairs, wood loss at shell detail and a separation in the solid oak top. Overall these minor issues do not detract from the overall aesthetic and intrigue of this piece. |
